Want to know what your psychologists read? Check out these book recommendations from some of our favorite stuff.
In this collection of books you'll find a combination of helpful and practical strategies to make real changes in your life as well help frameworks to build your choices and goals off of.
This is another great resource when it comes to behaviour change! There is a reason why this book is a best seller and for me the reason is how practical the strategies are.
My suggestion while building better habits is to choose one very specific change and follow the strategies in this book for a couple of weeks at a time until it’s second nature. This approach has the potential to change your life within a couple of months. How because good habits have a compounding effect!
My favourite strategy from this book is to attach new habits to habits you already have. Need to remember to take a pill every morning but struggling to remember, then start taking that pill right after you’ve brushed your teeth or with your morning coffee. Now all you have to do is keep those pills with your tooth paste or coffee cup.
As you flick through these recommendations the theme is clear, control what you can and take responsibility for your own experiences. Jordan Peterson’s book 12 Rules for Life, is no different.
So why read it?
All good philosophies can be endlessly explored and Dr Peterson’s book provides a road map of where to start and why. Not only does this align with BreakFree Psychology’s goal to facilitate your independence and fulfilment but it does so by providing you with the rational as to why should and how it works. Simply put, we’re always looking to teach you how to fish instead of just giving you a fish and this book does just that.
My favourtie rule, is Rule 4: Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today. Comparing yourself to who you were yesterday is the most relevant and most helpful comparison to make. It provides the road map to practical change and does not uncessarily dishearten you or worse give you an unfounded sense of security.
Here’s another fantastic read that perfectly resonates with our mission here at BreakFee Psychology! Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin embodies a mindset that breeds independence and confidence. It’s all about taking ownership of what’s within our control, empowering us to tackle whatever life throws our way. This kind of confidence is built on experience, and the concept of extreme ownership sets us up with the right mindset to gain that experience.
As you’ve probably noticed, the key is to start with the small things we can control and gradually build from there. It’s all about that steady progress!
Guess what? Another gem from Tim Ferriss! When it comes to putting good strategies into action, having a solid theory backing them up is key, and this book nails it! The strategies here are all about being measured, clearly defined, and building up over time—a winning combo!
Consistency is the name of the game, just like in Atomic Habits. My tip? Take it one strategy at a time, really master it, and then move on to the next. It’s all about that gradual progress, folks!
Here’s the kicker: I highly recommend revisiting this book every few years to fine-tune your life. We’re only human, and it’s easy to slip back into old habits. But with these strategies in your toolkit, you’ll be unstoppable!
I absolutely adore Tim Ferriss’ books! They’re a testament to the fact that super successful folks aren’t so different from the rest of us. It’s a bit of a cliché, I know, but dive into these pages, and you’ll see how these high achievers embraced their very human qualities to reach the top.
You know, sometimes folks view mental health strategies as a sign of weakness or brokenness, but these examples flip that script. They show us that these strategies are like our daily dose of veggies—they’re essential for feeling good and thriving.
In his interviews with countless successful individuals, Tim discovered something fascinating: a lot of them swear by reflection or gratitude exercises. It’s like a secret sauce for their success!
